Comprehensive Obedience Training (On- and Off-Leash)

Our core focus is obedience training to give you real control of your dog. Training covers all six basic commands (sit, stay, come, place, etc.) in real-life settings, not just repeats in a classroom. We structure this training in two main courses: a 5-week On-Leash course and a 10-week On/Off-Leash course. Each week you join our trainer for a one-on-one lesson with your dog, so you learn to reinforce the behavior at home. These programs use positive reinforcement to build function, control, and prevention of unwanted behaviors. We even include fun elements (like obedience drills and controlled agility obstacles) to keep dogs engaged – even high-energy German Shepherds or other working breeds learn quickly.

On-Leash Training (5 weeks): Weekly private lessons focused on leash manners and basic obedience.
On/Off-Leash Training (10 weeks): Extended course to establish reliable obedience off-leash.
Board-&-Train (In-Kennel, 3 weeks): Intensive stay-and-train program in our facility.

Each program includes the Dogs by Andy Family membership (lifetime support) and fully follows our proven curriculum. You will notice results such as a dog that sits quietly instead of jumping on guests, stays off furniture on command, and comes when called – giving you confidence everywhere you go.

Licensed Kennels & Boarding Facilities

We are proud that Dogs By Andy operates the only NCDA-licensed kennel in this region. State law requires any commercial boarding/training facility to have a license and veterinary permits, and to keep detailed records on every dog. Our spacious, climate-controlled kennel runs meet these standards – not cramped crates or old barns. Every boarded dog has access to fresh water and regular exercise.

Importantly, we welcome you to tour our facility anytime. Experts advise pet owners to “ask to see where your dog will spend most of his time” before leaving them at a kennel. We couldn’t agree more. When you visit, you’ll see clean runs, play yards, and caring kennel staff in action. We encourage questions and transparency, because nothing beats seeing the quality of care in person. By contrast, some smaller trainers use temporary setups that you don’t always get to inspect – Dogs By Andy gives you full confidence in our environment.

Experienced Trainers & Team

The Dogs By Andy team is built on expertise. Our founder Andy Hanellin (pictured with a trained Belgian Malinois) has taught dogs for over four decades. That kind of experience is rare in the area. All of our instructors are full-time, AKC-qualified trainers who learned directly from Andy. In other words, you benefit from Andy’s skill multiplied across our team. This is a huge advantage over “new” trainers or solo outfits. (For example, other local programs advertise roughly 15–20 years of experience and may only have one or two people on staff.)

We handle every breed and temperament. Whether you have a puppy or a senior dog, a laid-back Labrador or an energetic German Shepherd, our methods yield results. Owners of large breeds in particular see that even their toughest dogs become calm and responsive under our guidance. Our trainers are experts in behavior modification, so we fix common issues like jumping, barking, or pulling in a gentle but effective way. You’ll see the difference when a dog that once tugged constantly now walks calmly at heel – a result that only comes from the right experience and team.
