  • Safety – The first goal of on-leash training is safety. You can hold on to your puppy as he tries to dart out in the street, and you can also pull her away from that smelly item she really shouldn’t eat. On-leash training sets boundaries and gives you peace of mind.
  • Communication – If you think of the leash as an extension of your arm, the way you hold it, the tension or slack, and the way you direct your dog are all forms of communication in addition to or aside from vocal commands. Communicating with your dog through on-leash training is a great way to give yourself more control without having to say a word.
  • Expectations – Telling your dog that you have expectations is important. When your dog is wearing his leash, he needs to know that you are in charge of his walking and interactions with others. You can relay your expectations, and your dog will follow your lead.
  • Trust – On-leash training is a great way to develop trust between you and your dog. Once you have taught your puppy that she is safer with you than anywhere else, you will find that other training opportunities come with ease.
On-Leash Training

Why On-Leash Training Matters

Good leash manners are about much more than preventing your dog from pulling during walks. A dog that walks calmly on a leash is easier to manage around other people, other dogs, busy neighborhoods, parks, and everyday distractions. Better leash skills also create a safer and more enjoyable experience for both dogs and their owners.

Professional on-leash training helps establish the communication and consistency needed for lifelong obedience. As dogs learn to focus on their handler and respond reliably to commands, owners gain confidence knowing they can enjoy walks, family outings, and new experiences together without unnecessary stress.

What Will Your Dog Learn?

Throughout our On-Leash Training program, dogs learn practical obedience skills designed to improve behavior both at home and in public. Every lesson builds on the previous one, helping dogs become more attentive, responsive, and confident while strengthening the bond between dog and owner.

Training may include:

  • Loose-leash walking
  • Sit
  • Down
  • Stay
  • Heel
  • Place
  • Waiting politely at doors
  • Greeting people without jumping
  • Improved focus around distractions
  • Better communication with the handler
  • Calm behavior during walks
  • Reliable everyday obedience

Every dog progresses at a different pace, and training is customized to meet each dog’s personality, age, and learning style.

Building the Foundation for Lifelong Success

Every advanced training program begins with a strong foundation. Before dogs can become reliable off leash, they must first learn to focus on their handler, respond consistently to commands, and develop confidence while working on leash.

Our On-Leash Training program teaches the communication, consistency, and obedience that prepare dogs for success throughout their lives. For owners interested in advanced reliability and dependable recall in a variety of environments, many dogs continue into our On-Leash and Off-Leash Training program after mastering these essential skills.
