dog trainer doesn’t make you a poor pet parent

While there are some people who know how to “speak” to dogs, there are those of us who desperately want to bond with our dog, but aren’t sure how to get past behavioral or training problems. Not being a great dog trainer doesn’t make you a poor pet parent; it just means that you need some skills! If you are looking for a good dog trainer in your area, there are a few different ways you can find a good one.

  • Ask your veterinarian. Vets are around animals quite literally all throughout their working day. If anyone knows the good trainers in the area, it’s a successful vet! Some will even have business cards or referrals that they can give you.
  • Research online . . . carefully. Online research is a fantastic way to get a lot of information, but you always need to take this information with a grain of salt. Keep in mind that reviews can be fake or altered, pictures can be deceiving, and online recommendations can be biased. It’s best to get a few names or locations online and then run them past other pet owners in the area.
  • Visit a local dog park. Most cities will have at least one spot where dog owners frequent to let their furry friends socialize. Many dog owners are just as friendly and personable as their canine companions, so don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation and ask for some recommendations. As a bonus, you can meet the dog and see the dog trainer’s results for yourself!
