Off-Leash Training in Charlotte, North CarolinaHave you ever seen a well-trained dog that follows the commands of its owner, even without the physical restraint of a leash? If you’ve always dreamed of having your dog walk next to you without a leash or follow your commands as soon as you give them, you may be looking for a trusted training partner to help make that dream a reality. At Dogs By Andy K-9 Services, we specialize in off-leash training for dogs of all ages. Typically we start by training dogs to walk well on a leash without pulling or trying to get away. From there, we can start the process of off-leash training to give your pooch more confidence and teach good behaviors.

When it comes to keeping your dog safe, it is important that they know how to behave both on a leash and without one. While on-leash training is important, following it up with off-leash training is something we advise here at Dogs By Andy K-9 Services. We work with several dogs and their owners in the Charlotte, North Carolina area who want to know their commands will be followed when their dog is not on a leash.

By nature, dogs seem to do well when they’re not on leashes during outdoor playtime. Playing at a dog park is great for dogs, in terms of socialization and physical activity, but if your dog doesn’t listen when you call him or her, or you worry about the possibility of a fight breaking out, it’s hard to enjoy the experience. You may end up feeling so concerned about your dog’s safety that you won’t even go to the park, which can lead to unhealthy habits and aggression due to a lack of play. With off-leash training, you can make sure your dog follows your commands, even when the leash isn’t attached to his collar, and take advantage of the benefits of active, unrestrained play.

There are many circumstances when you want your dog to do as you ask, often for their safety. If you are playing with your dog in the yard and suddenly a stray cat or a fire engine passing by gets your dog’s attention, you want them to listen when you tell them to stay by your side. Chasing after something can lead to tragedy when the pursuit takes them into traffic or a fight ensues. Our Master Trainer, Andy, has more than 30 years of experience with off-leash training and other types of dog training, so you can be confident of excellent results. Our off-leash training course runs for 10 weeks to provide consistency that is the key to success. Our state-of-the-art facility provides the perfect environment for learning.

Teaching Necessary Functions

We teach basic commands that are necessary functions for your dog’s safety and the well-being of people and other animals. Commands are important at all times for a variety of reasons. If your dog is well trained, you have the control and that is important if you are a responsible dog owner.

A well trained dog is also able to communicate and function in your home and around others. Training is about function, control and prevention.

Consider the following: A well-trained dog always responds to a command — not just some of the time or part of the time. Why is this important?

  • A dog cannot SIT and jump on a person at the same time.
  • A dog cannot SIT and STAY and run out the door into traffic at the same time.
  • A dog that obeys the HEEL command will not pull you down the street.
  • A dog that responds to DOWN and STAY can enjoy being in the room with you without interfering with your mealtime or guests.
  • A dog that COMES WHEN CALLED is not going to have to be chased.

Environmental Issues such as Barking, Unwanted Jumping, and Climbing on Furniture are also taught during our training.

Six Basic Commands

A well-trained dog is not a destructive dog. Destruction is expensive! PLEASE do not hit or yell at your dog. Even if you are frustrated because of your dog’s behavior. Here’s why…

Verbal and physical abuse can never be a part of the relationship between you and your dog. Abuse destroys love and trust in dogs as well as people. How is a dog going to learn if he is afraid of your hands, your feet or your voice? Why should a dog “Come” to you if he is frightened? Yes, yelling will scare him. Your dog’s hearing is five-times better than yours. If you are yelling at him and he cowers, it’s not guilt. He is afraid of the sound.

We teach you and your dog six basic commands that will help ease your frustration and help your dog better understand you. Commands taught include:

  • Sit
  • Stay
  • Down
  • Come
  • Heel
  • Place – The “Place” command teaches your dog to go to and stay at a pre-determined “place” within the house. This command is very useful when entertaining or when delivery people are at your door.
